Zhang briefed the committee on the work of courts over the past year and exchanged views on strengthening oversight and promoting high-quality judicial work.
Zhang highlighted the measures taken and progress achieved by courts nationwide in applying a sound approach to evaluating performance in judicial work, clearing long-pending cases, intensifying efforts to address difficulties in judgment enforcement, applying technology in adjudication, conscientiously responding to discipline inspections of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and strengthening the people’s assessor system.
He said the progress would not have been possible without the effective supervision of the NPC. The committee’s recognition of the work of courts, together with its comments and suggestions, served as both encouragement and impetus for courts to ensure effective implementation of all their tasks, he noted.
Zhang urged courts around the country to more proactively accept the supervision of people’s congresses and other sectors, faithfully implement the resolutions and decisions of people’s congresses and further practice whole-process people’s democracy.
Courts should consciously carry out their day-to-day work under supervision and continuously promote the high-quality development of adjudication in the new era, he added.
Zhang expressed the hope that the committee would continue to exercise robust oversight of and provide strong support for the work of courts, encouraging them to faithfully perform the duties entrusted to them by the Constitution and laws and make new and greater contribution to advancing Chinese modernization.
Yang outlined the committee's major work in the first half of the year. He said the committee has conscientiously implemented the decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee, adopted and applied a correct view of governance performance and developed a sound understanding of the objectives and tasks for supervisory and judicial affairs during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–30).
In accordance with the requirements of the NPC Standing Committee and based on its statutory responsibilities as a special committee, it has worked to promote the high-quality development of the NPC’s supervisory and judicial affairs, according to Yang.
He said that since 2023, the committee and the SPC have established a regular and effective mechanism for communication and coordination. The committee will continue to combine support with supervision and support the SPC in safeguarding high-quality development through efficient, high-quality adjudication, he added.
This year, the committee will give particular attention to assisting the NPC Standing Committee in hearing and deliberating the report on the work of people’s assessors and will work with the SPC to further develop and improve the people’s assessor system, he added.
Qiu Xueqiang, vice-chairperson of the committee, and committee member Xian Tieke offered comments and suggestions on courts' work.
Also attending the meeting were Gao Youdong, vice-chairperson of the committee; committee member Li Ning; Deng Xiuming, executive vice-president of the SPC; Sun Zhenping, head of the SPC’s Political Department; and other officials from the committee and the SPC.
