Wang Shumei meets with secretary-general of International Organization for Mediation Institute

On Nov 3, Wang Shumei, a standing member of the Supreme People's Court (SPC)'s adjudication committee (vice-ministerial level), met in Beijing with a delegation led by Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, secretary-general of the International Organization for Mediation Institute (IOMed).

Wang extended congratulations on the opening of the IOMed in Hong Kong and Cheng’s appointment as its inaugural secretary-general. She briefed the delegation on China’s diversified dispute resolution mechanisms in the adjudication of foreign-related commercial cases. Wang noted that the SPC will continue to support the work of the IOMed and expressed the hope of establishing regular cooperation with IOMed in areas such as improving the judicial confirmation mechanism for international commercial mediation agreements and enhancing the enforceability of mediated settlements.

Cheng expressed appreciation for the meeting and said she looks forward to jointly exploring new issues arising from the development of international mediation mechanisms. She called for deeper exchanges on improving rules for international commercial mediation and strengthening the training of mediators.

Officials from relevant departments of the SPC also attended the meeting.
