Zhang Jun calls for integration of theory and practice in legal education

The editorial committee of a publication regarding case references for legal education convened a meeting in Beijing on June 5. Zhang Jun, president of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), met with the experts and scholars attending the meeting.

The case references, planned and to be published by the People's Court Press, will be published in series that feature controversial, complex and challenging cases for legal education. 

The publication is initiated by the China Law Society's Association for Legal Education and Association for Case Law Study, whose editorial committee is composed of legal experts, legal practitioners, officials from relevant departments of the SPC, and judicial experts from around the country. The compilation work is undertaken by several law schools in the country.

While meeting the legal experts and scholars, Zhang emphasized that Chinese modernization calls for new and higher standards for judicial adjudication and legal education. 

He stressed the need to deepen research into legal theories concerning socialism with Chinese characteristics on the basis of practical issues in judicial practice, and strengthen the integration of theory and practice in legal education. 

Zhang called for efficient compilation and utilization of the case references, and by delving into practical cases, facilitating exchanges among educators, researchers and practitioners in the legal field in order to realize deep integration and mutual enhancement of legal theory, education and practice. 

In this way,  the public’s awareness of the rule of law will be elevated, and the development of the rule of law in China will be advanced, he added.

During the meeting, experts and scholars acknowledged the significance of compiling and publishing the case references, and actively provided opinions and suggestions for further improvement in related work.
