The Supreme People's Court (SPC) held a symposium on Jan 26 to solicit opinions from representatives of various sectors on courts' overall work and its draft work report to be submitted to the upcoming annual session of the National People's Congress.

Zhang Jun, chief justice and president of the SPC, called for pooling wisdom and strength and urged courts around the country to better implement whole-process people's democracy.

At the symposium, 12 grassroots representatives of different occupations, including migrant workers, lawyers, medical workers and couriers, as well as eight representatives from central and state organs responsible for law-related affairs and the protection of the interests of relevant groups, acknowledged the courts' work over the past year in the judicial protection of people's livelihoods as summarized in the draft work report, and offered suggestions for further improvements in cross-departmental collaboration and popularization of law.

Zhang thanked them for their suggestions, saying that they will be considered and absorbed into the draft report and future work plans of courts nationwide.

He stressed that the people-centered principle should be thoroughly implemented. Through inviting representatives from all walks of life to conduct research and studies, courts can get a better understanding of the judicial needs of the people and those working at the grassroots level and further improve their work, Zhang said.

He urged for better litigation-source governance and stronger mediation efforts, adding that courts should go all-out to solve the most worrying problems of the people.

Efforts should also be made to publicize judicial rules and improve social rules through more targeted approaches, such as releasing judicial policies, judicial interpretations, and typical cases, Zhang noted.
