The head of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC) met with President of the Constitutional Court of Latvia Ineta Ziemele on July 11.
Zhou Qiang, chief justice and president of the SPC, said that the bilateral relationship between China and Latvia is going well and the two sides have sound cooperation and communication.
He outlined the progress in China’s legal construction and implementation of its Constitution and pointed out that China attaches high importance to those areas and works to promote the rule of law.
The Constitution underwent revision at the First Session of the 13th National People’s Congress and Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era was written into it; giving it a leading role in the new age.
He added that the SPC is willing to promote its relationship with the Constitutional Court of Latvia to assist with implementation of the Constitution, human rights and justice in China.
Speaking of judicial guarantees of human rights, Zhou said that China is working to promote a criminal litigation system centered on guaranteed procedural rights of the parties involved and that prevents and corrects wrongful convictions. The goal is to penalize crime while protecting human rights.
Ineta expressed her gratitude to Zhou for the meeting, saying that she is willing to promote judicial exchanges between the two countries and carry out pragmatic cooperation.
