China opened its first national research institute for legal aid on Jan 19 in Beijing to improve and accelerate development of legislation in the area.

The institute, based at the China University of Political Science and Law, offers a great platform to deepen legal education and juridical practice, according to Xiong Xuanguo, vice-minister of justice.

The cause of legal aid should be people-centered, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the parties concerned and uphold social fairness and justice, said Xiong.

Over the past few years, China has achieved great progress in legal aid, said Xiong. He added that given the country’s development of the rule of law and judicial reform, the legal aid system in the country should be further improved.

He said China should deepen research in legal aid theory and take an active part in international exchanges and communication in the field.

It is a good way to coordinate China’s research into legal aid theory, promote the country’s experience and achievements and enhance its global influence in the area, Xiong said.
