Zhou Qiang, chief justice and president of the Supreme People's Court, said courts all over China have been working hard to reach the goal of “letting the people feel fairness and justice in each and every legal case” since the 18th Communist Party of China National Congress held in 2012.
Judicial functions have played their part well in maintaining social stability and harmony, he said.
The judicial system helps to guarantee sustainable and healthy development of society and the economy, Zhou added.
He said reform of the system, centered on judicial responsibility, has achieved great progress in this period.
According to Zhou, the building of smart courts and the modernization of the trial system are in full swing.
At the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in October, a new set of plans, including establishment of a central leading group for advancing law-based governance, was introduced.
The congress helped to set new goals to better implement the rule of law in China, according to Zhou.
In 2018, courts around the country should provide better judicial service and guarantees, Zhou demanded.
A good legal environment to protect legitimate business operations should be strengthened, he said.
He also called for accelerating smart court construction and promoting the convergence of big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Zhou called on retired court staff attending the conference to offer advice and suggestions to help improve people’s courts in the coming year.
