The Supreme People's Court (SPC) led a seminar in Xi'an Jiaotong University on Oct 24, tackling issues surrounding the legal disputes with the countries and regions along the Belt and Road.
Centered on the establishment of a sound judicial system to deal with legal issues, the conference concentrated on solution design, current institutional limits and reforms in investment arbitration.
Hosted by Shan Wenhua, director of the Law School of Xi'an Jiaotong University, the meeting was attended by over 40 experts and scholars from the government, China's top comprehensive universities and institutions dealing with trade affairs.
Wang Xiaoli, executive vice-secretary of the university, warmly welcomed the guests, saying that the university has set up intellectual institutions to research the Belt and Road Initiative, facilitating international exchange on various issues and offering suggestions for national policies.
Shaanxi province is blessed with geographical advantages and has played an outstanding historical role on the Silk Road Economic Belt, according to Vice-Governor of Shaanxi Province Du Hangwei.
Du encouraged the Shaanxi departments and universities to work closely with the SPC to establish a demonstrative zone featuring legal service and innovations and contributing to legal construction in China.
Liu Guixiang, a member of the highest court's judicial committee, briefed conference attendees on the guiding ideology and detailed designs of the new judicial system.
The SPC is working to establish courts in cities like Xi'an to deal with international commercial issues and disputes in an effort to provide efficient legal services for the countries along the Belt and Road. It will also step up issuance of judicial interpretations and guiding cases, which will provide guidance in issues of law and justice, Liu noted.
Members agreed that it is urgent to establish a reliable legal system as China furthers business and trade cooperation with Belt and Road countries.
