Tao Kaiyuan, vice president of China’s Supreme People’s Court (SPC), attended the 2016 EU supreme court president alliance seminar from Oct 20 to 21 in Madrid where she outlined attempts of Chinese courts at all levels to build an alternative dispute resolution system.
Presidents and vice presidents from the member states, observing countries and guest states of the alliance discussed the growth of alternative dispute resolution in their countries, the contributions of different supreme courts’ to that growth, and their thinking about its future.
This is the first time that a representative of China’s SPC has been invited to the seminar. Tao made a speech in English on the theme of “promoting an alternative dispute resolution system” and “the role of a supreme court in the development of law”.
In the first speech, Tao said she hopes to increase exchanges and share experience with other countries including those of the EU so as to advance the resolution of disputes through peaceful and rational dialogue and negotiation.
In addressing the second theme, Tao introduced the role of China’s top court in the development of law from various perspectives, including judicial explanations, release of judicial policies, case guidance and participation in legislative activity.
She indicated that in the future, China’s top tribunal will play an active role in building a socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics and promoting the growth of Chinese law.
Other participants noted Tao’s speech and thought highly of it. They all expressed their willingness for more exchanges and cooperation with their Chinese counterpart.
