Cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan in the judicial field has made significant advances in the past few years, said Jiang Bixin, vice-president of the Supreme People’s Court, on Dec 24.
More than 50,000 cases in judicial assistance were handled since a mutual legal assistance agreement became effective six years ago, Jiang said when he met with Shih Hui-Fen, vice-chairman and secretary-general of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), who was on a visit to Beijing with a SEF delegation.
A relatively stable mechanism for mutual exchange has gradually taken shape over the years as judicial communication went deeper.
It is evident that the Cross-Straits Joint Fight against Crime and Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement has brought benefits to people both in the mainland and Taiwan and thus has won support from them.
At the meeting, both parties said they believed the agreement will further benefit the people through their collaborative efforts.
At the invitation of the Beijing-based Association for Relations across the Taiwan Straits, the SEF delegation will also tour the SPC’s second circuit court in Shenyang, Liaoning province.
