The Supreme People's Court released ten typical cases on the ecological protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as part of the efforts to intensify publicity and showcase progress in this regard.

The quality and functional status of the ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau directly affects China's ecological security, biodiversity, water supply, climate stability, and carbon balance. It plays a unique and irreplaceable role in maintaining ecological security, not only in China but also the world.

The ten cases fall in a variety of litigation types, such as criminal, civil, administrative, and public interest lawsuits, and cover a range of ecosystem elements, such as forests, alpine grasslands, grasslands, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and snowy mountains and glaciers. They involve the protection of rare and endangered species, the prevention and control of invasive species, the protection of major rivers' headwaters, key lakes, and nature reserves, mining pollution control and ecological restoration, as well as the protection of traditional ecological and cultural heritage. The cases fully demonstrate the fruitful results of the people's courts in performing their functions in environmental resource trials and lawfully safeguarding national ecological security.

On April 26, 2023, the second session of the 14th National People's Congress Standing Committee passed the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Ecological Protection Law, which will come into effect on Sept 1, 2023.
