President and Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China Zhang Jun met with a delegation headed by President of the Supreme Court of Brazil Luis Roberto Barroso at the SPC in Beijing on July 1.

Zhang extended a warm welcome to the delegation, emphasizing that the two countries have steadily developed bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties 50 years ago, and yielded fruitful results in pragmatic cooperation in various fields and close people-to-people exchanges. He noted that the meeting between the presidents of China and Brazil in April last year provided strategic guidance for future bilateral relations, creating a new future for their relations in the new era. Over the years, the judicial communities of China and Brazil have strengthened cooperation and mutual support under multilateral mechanisms and frameworks such as BRICS and the G20, while China has pursued stable and sustainable development of relations with Portuguese-speaking countries, he added.

Zhang gave a brief introduction to the work of China's courts, focusing on digital development, an area of interest to the Brazilian side. According to him, courts in China have fully tapped into the role of science and technology in facilitating litigation and case-handling to enhance adjudication quality and efficiency. They have also taken the digital court as a pivotal support and fundamental hallmark in advancing the modernization of adjudication, striving to contribute Chinese wisdom to the development of the rule of law on the international stage in the information age, according to Zhang. Zhang said China is willing to strengthen mutual learning and pragmatic cooperation so the two countries could jointly make greater contributions to judicial development and the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Barroso said that despite differing national conditions, the difficulties faced by the Brazilian judicial organs are exactly what their Chinese counterparts are addressing. Courts in Brazil are ready to build an exchange platform with their Chinese counterparts and carry out in-depth cooperation on the digital development of court work to facilitate the proper resolution of respective problems, he said. He also expressed his hope that in-depth exchanges with China on the application of artificial intelligence in judicial work would be enhanced through mechanisms such as the BRICS Chief Justice Forum.

The Brazilian delegation also visited the China Court Museum, the digital court laboratory and the courtrooms at the SPC.
