Zhang Jun attends opening ceremony of BRICS Chief Justices Forum

Zhang Jun, chief justice and president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China, has called for upholding the BRICS spirit and promoting close communication and exchanges to write a new chapter of judicial cooperation among BRICS countries.

Zhang made the remarks on June 19, while attending the opening ceremony of the BRICS Chief Justices Forum in Sochi, Russia.

While addressing the opening ceremony of the forum, Zhang said that in recent years, BRICS countries have embraced the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, making the mechanism a model of multilateral cooperation within the international community.

Noting that judicial exchanges and cooperation are integral parts of BRICS cooperation, Zhang expressed the hope that judicial sectors of BRICS countries will continue to deepen practical cooperation in the field of judicial enforcement to jointly enhance their judicial capabilities and standards, and explore the establishment of institutional arrangements for judicial assistance among BRICS countries in order to effectively crack down on cross-border crimes and handle international civil and commercial disputes. He called on judicial sectors of BRICS countries to share judicial experiences, further enhance exchanges in judicial reforms, and strengthen cooperation in information-based development of courts as well as in judge training, case studies, and the development of a diversified dispute resolution mechanism.

China's SPC is willing to enhance communication and exchange with its counterparts of participating countries to write a new chapter in judicial cooperation among BRICS countries, providing robust judicial services for the modernization drive of each country and contributing to the progress of human civilization, he said.

Following the opening ceremony, Zhang delivered a thematic speech on China's practices in achieving judicial justice and efficiency by improving the unified legal application mechanism. According to him, Chinese courts have striven to formulate high-quality judicial interpretations to unify legal application standards, established a guiding case system with Chinese characteristics to unify adjudication standards of similar cases, intensified adjudication management and regulation to improve the legal application mechanism, and improved the capabilities of judges in unifying legal applications.

Irina Podnosova, chief justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, chaired the opening ceremony.

Boissie Mbha, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa; Mohammed bin Hamad Al Badi Al-Dhaheri, president of the Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates; Hosni Abdul Latif, president of the Supreme Court of Cassation of Egypt; Tewodros Mihret, chief justice of Ethiopia; Surya Kant, judge of the Supreme Court of India; Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Iran; and Valentin Sukalo, chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus, also delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.
