Upon invitation of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), a judiciary delegation headed by Andrew Cheung, chief justice of the Court of Final Appeal of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), visited the people's courts in several mainland cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) from March 20 to 22. Yang Wanming, vice-president of the SPC, met with Cheung and the delegation in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, on March 20.

Yang first conveyed the welcome to the delegation from Zhang Jun, president of the SPC, and introduced the main outcomes and significance of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and this year's two sessions.

He said that the next five years are a crucial period in building a modern socialist country in all respects, and for Hong Kong to break new ground and make new leaps forward. He hoped that the judiciary in Hong Kong will uphold the constitutional order of the region in strict accordance with the Constitution, the Basic Law of the HKSAR and the National Security Law, constantly improve the judicial system and legal system in the HKSAR, and continue to strengthen judicial exchanges and cooperation with the mainland, in a bid to contribute to the development of the GBA and law-based governance.

Cheung said that the judiciary in the HKSAR attaches great importance to "improving the judicial system and legal system in the SARs", as mentioned in the report to the 20th CPC National Congress, and will strive to explore reformative measures. He pledged to serve the "needs of the country" with the "best of Hong Kong", continue to comprehensively and accurately implement the Constitution, the Basic Law and the National Security Law, deepen exchanges and cooperation with mainland courts, and play a greater role in facilitating Hong Kong's integration into the overall development of the country while maintaining its unique status and advantages.

During their stay, the delegation held symposiums at the SPC's First Circuit Court and the Guangdong High People's Court, and visited a number of courts, including the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court, the Guangzhou Intellectual Property Court, the Guangzhou Internet Court and the court of Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
