The sixth Chongming world-class ecological island judicial seminar was held on Nov 15 in Shanghai. Jointly held by the Shanghai High People's Court, the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and the Shanghai Chongming district government, the seminar focused on hot frontier eco-related judicial issues from the perspective of achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Yang Linping, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), attended and addressed the seminar via video link.

Yang noted that achieving the dual carbon goals is a strategic decision made by the central leadership, which was highlighted in the report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Courts across the nation are committed to deepening reform and innovation in environmental justice, in order to safeguard high-quality socioeconomic development and meet the people's needs for a beautiful ecological environment.

She pointed out that all courts have adopted the new development concept to serve the green transformation of development mode; striven to build a specialized trial system for environmental resources with Chinese characteristics, enhancing the judicial capacity and ability in ecological protection; and have strengthened international exchanges and proactively participated in global cooperation in ecological civilization development, which has significantly increased the international credibility of China in environment resource-related trials. She also acknowledged Shanghai courts’ efforts in strengthening coordination with administrative organs and exploring practical experiences.

Representatives from domestic and foreign judicial departments and higher education institutes and associations shared their experiences at the seminar. Chongming district court also released a judicial opinion on guaranteeing Shanghai's first carbon neutrality demonstration zone, as well as six typical cases on judicial protection of the ecological environment.
