People's jurors exceed 330,000 in China
As of July 2022, China had more than 332,000 people's jurors nationwide, nearly three times more than that in 2013, says a report on China's jury system released by the Supreme People's Court (SPC) on Oct 11. The source of jurors has become more diversified, and the structure more reasonable, with better representation and a wider coverage of judicial democracy.
According to the report, since the enactment of the people's jurors law in April 2018, and by the end of September 2022, people's jurors had participated in trials of more than 2.15 million criminal cases, 8.79 million civil cases and 780,000 administrative cases. Among them, over 23,000 cases involving public interest and of significant social impact were concluded by seven-member collegial panels composed of people's jurors.
The SPC also released ten typical cases with jurors' participation on the day, which highlighted jurors' roles in participating, witnessing and supervising the judiciary.
