Ma Caiyun, a former judge at the Changping District People’s Court in Beijing, has been posthumously honored as a model judge of Beijing by the Beijing High People’s Court and the Beijing Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.

At 9:30 pm on February 26, two gunmen broke into Ma’s home. After her effort to stop them came to no avail, one of the gunmen shot at her husband Li Fusheng, a bailiff at the Changping court, but the gun did not go off. The gunmen then fired at her, and she died after being hit by two shots. She was only 38.

Ma, a Party member, was born in February 1978 and had a Bachelor's degree in law. She had worked with the Changping court’s Huilongguan tribunal since joining the court in July 2001. She was promoted to assistant judge in March 2007 and to judge in December 2009.

Ma worked earnestly until the last moment of her life. She had concluded nearly 3,000 civil cases; an average of some 400 each year. She had won praise from litigants as well as many honors and awards from the political and legal system.

The Changping court has applied to the district and municipal governments for an award of the title “martyr” to Ma for her loyalty to the people and her enthusiasm and sacrifice for the judicial cause.
