Courts nationwide remain committed to promoting impartial justice and effectively resolving disputes in support of the nation’s social and economic development, according to Zhang Jun, president of the Supreme People’s Court.

Zhang made the remarks while joining deputies to the National People’s Congress (NPC) from Henan province in a group deliberation of the government work report at the third session of the 14th NPC on March 5.

Zhang said the social and economic progress of the last year demonstrated the political advantages of the Communist Party of China's leadership and the institutional strengths of socialism with Chinese characteristics, further solidifying the determination and confidence of people of all ethnic groups in building a modern socialist country in the new era.

"Based on our judicial responsibilities, courts have taken a series of measures in serving high-quality development through fair and lawful adjudication, issuing judicial interpretations and policies, and publishing typical cases, achieving positive results in serving the overall development of the country and administering justice for the people," Zhang said.

He stressed that courts will faithfully fulfill their duties entrusted by the Constitution and laws, adhere to strict and impartial justice, effectively resolve disputes, and continuously deepen reforms to ensure the implementation of the various tasks outlined in the government work report.

Efforts will be made to crack down on criminal activities in accordance with the law, implement a criminal policy of combining harsh punishment with leniency, and effectively carry out the special campaign of "resolving conflicts and risks to maintain social stability" to enhance the sense of security among the people, he said.

Zhang said courts will strive to protect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers in accordance with the law, boost consumer confidence, strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights, and create a fair and dynamic market environment to advance the construction of a unified national market.

Efforts will also be made to coordinate development and security, and collaborate with relevant government authorities to prevent and defuse risks in key areas such as real estate and finance, he said.

He pledged that courts will properly handle the cases related to employment, healthcare, education and elderly care in accordance with the law, and continuously safeguard and improve people's livelihoods to allow the people to enjoy a greater sense of fulfillment.
