China's top court held a launching ceremony on Jan 4 to select 10 classic cases among 20 candidates in 2017 that influenced the country and pushed forward the building of a stronger legal framework.

The 20 candidates included several high-profile cases that ignited heated public discussion last year.

“Their judgments showed that the justice and legal significance behind the cases deserved further study," said Shen Deyong, vice-president of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC).

It's the third time that the SPC has held the selection. "We want to push forward the nation's building of the rule of law and explain our laws and work to the public through these individual cases," Shen said.

"I hope the value of the selected cases will urge judges to be more professional in hearing disputes, and help regulate our trials and enhance public legal awareness," he added.

The selection activity and the 20 candidates have been open to the public on the website of the Supreme People's Court, according to a statement of the top court.

The activity, jointly held by the SPC and China Central Television, will end on Jan 10, with the result to be disclosed at the beginning of next month.
