The deputy head of China's top court met with a visiting Hong Kong team led by the chief justice of the Court of Final Appeal on Dec 4 in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

Shen Deyong, executive vice-president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), welcomed Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey MA Tao-li and introduced matters concerning Hong Kong and Macao that were reported at the 19th CPC National Congress.

The "one country, two systems" principle and “promote national reunification” are the basic strategies, said Shen, citing the report.

He said he hopes the judicial organs in Hong Kong will resolutely defend the authority of the nation's Constitution and the Basic Law of the HKSAR to maintain prosperity and stability in the future.

Ma echoed Shen, saying that maintaining the rule of law and improving the judicial process are the common goals of all courts in both the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong despite the differences of judiciary systems.

He hoped both sides will deepen judicial cooperation.
